Flood Insurance Information
A traditional home insurance policy doesn’t cover flood damage. Flood insurance is a separate policy that helps provide coverage if a home or business sustains flood damage.
J A Campisano Insurance Agency can help you get flood insurance for your New Jersey property.
What Is Flood Insurance
Flood insurance is property insurance that helps cover losses caused by water damage after a flood. Without supplemental insurance or a standalone flood insurance policy, your losses are not covered if your building or possessions are damaged due to flooding.
The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) provides access to flood insurance to homeowners in communities in the NFIP-designated floodplains through private insurers. Flood insurance is available for commercial and residential properties. It may be required by your mortgage company or lienholder, depending on where you live. Your agent can help you get flood insurance quotes for your New Jersey home or business.
Who Needs Flood Insurance
Businesses and homeowners with government-backed loans in high-risk flood areas must have flood insurance.
You must have flood insurance to be considered for future federal disaster aid if you have received federal disaster assistance, such as low-interest disaster loans from the Small Business Administration (SBA) or grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Even if you aren’t required to buy flood insurance, it may be wise to do so. Your agent can help evaluate your risks and exposures and shop for appropriate insurance coverage.
What Does Flood Insurance Cover?
Flood insurance helps cover damage to structures and possessions as a direct result of flooding. With NFIP flood insurance, you may have coverage for the following:
- Electrical and plumbing systems
- Permanently installed carpets
- Staircases and foundation walls
- Permanently installed bookcases, cabinets and paneling
- Well water tanks and pumps
Contents coverage with NFIP flood insurance may help cover the following:
- Up to $2,500 of damage to valuable items such as original artwork
- Portable air conditioners
- Carpet installed over wood floors
- Personal belongings, including furniture and clothing
Does Renters Insurance Cover Flood Damage?
Renters insurance does not include coverage for flood damage. Your landlord is not responsible for covering damage to your possessions after a flood.
The NFIP provides flood insurance to renters. Alternatively, you may be able to purchase a renters insurance endorsement to help provide coverage for flood damage.
